Our Analysis & Ratings

For a reasonably priced, portable and comfortable chair, the REI Co-Op Outward Lawn Chair is a versatile option. It’s small and easily transportable, and easy to set up and store away, but if you don’t like being so low to the ground or are on the taller side, you might want to look elsewhere.

Comfort - The REI Co-Op Outward Lawn Chair has a fully padded seat and backrest, providing immense comfort while sitting. The armrests are made of wood, so they’re sturdy but possibly not the most comfortable for everyone. It does have its issues, though, in that it’s low to the ground, so taller individuals will struggle to get out and comfortably rest their legs, and the frame is narrow due to the shape of the armrests, so it’s not great for heavier individuals.

Construction - Despite being simple in design, it’s a stable chair. Made from 300D ripstop nylon and aluminum poles. The padded fabric does mean it’s not the most breathable, so you might get a bit hot sitting in it on warmer days.

Features - There are no added features to the chair — no pockets or cupholder — so it’s very basic and simple in design. Being so low to the ground, though, you can just place your belongings next to you.

Size/Weight - It folds in half (with a hook to keep it in place), making storage, setup and pack down incredibly easy. It comes with backpack straps so you can move it around easily while keeping your arms free for other gear. At 7lb 7oz, it’s not the lightest chair, but still much lighter than many on our list. It also has no storage case, although being folded in half, it’s easy to store away.

Versatility - The chair combines comfort and portability, meaning it’s a great pick to take to concerts, camping trips and the beach.

Overall - While it could have more features for the price, the REI Co-Op Outward Lawn Chair is great if this is the style of chair you’re after.
