Our Analysis & Ratings

The REI Co-op Trailmade 2 is a great tent for beginners. It’s primarily for shorter backpacking trips due to its weight but has the space and simplicity that beginners are looking for when camping.

Comfort - The tent can fit two people plus some gear by your feet. It also has vestibules, giving you more room on the inside. It has limited storage, though. The tent is also a bit low, giving you minimal headroom due to the X-pattern design, but there’s plenty of floor space. It’s just not a tent you want to be spending too much time in.

Construction - The poles of the REI Co-op Trailmade 2 are made of aluminum while the rainfly is made of coated polyester and the inner tent is made of polyester/nylon. It has a bit of a basic shape compared to others, with a design that limits headspace, but the poles, tent and fly are symmetrical, making the setup simple.

Features - The tent has two doors, allowing both of you and another person to easily get in and out, although there are only two pockets inside which limits storage. There are also no internal loops to hang items from. There are, however, two vents at the top to let air escape, which is great to see.

Size/Weight - The REI Co-op Trailmade 2 weighs in at 5.65lbs, which can be strenuous on longer trips, plus with its bulk, makes it a tent you would use when you’re not trekking far. You can split it though, so one person carries half while the other carries the rest.

Versatility - While a bit bulky and heavy for trekking long distances, the REI Co-op Trailmade 2 is functional. It’s great for those who are just starting out camping and want all the basics at a decent price. It’s a 3-season tent (not meant for winter), although it’s not fantastic in the wind, just make sure to attach the guy lines before you head out camping.

Overall - For a cheaper beginner tent for car campers, the REI Co-op Trailmade 2 is a sturdy little thing.
