Our Analysis & Ratings
If you’re one to camp in the extremes, the Mountain Hardwear Trango 2 is the one for you. Its build and bulk are not needed for summer camping or skiing trips, but for the hardcore, remote campers on long trips, its space and design are fantastic.
Comfort - The inside of this backpacking tent is very spacious. It can squeeze in three people, although it’s marketed primarily as a 2-person tent. A downside is that the ceiling is quite low, a design feature that allows it to sustain high winds, but you’re still fine to sit up.
Construction - The poles are made from DAC Featherlight NSL while the rainfly and floor are made from 70D nylon taffeta, the rainfly 2000mm and the floor 10000mm. These quality materials, poles, guy lines and construction increase its strength. It’s a tent that will last you years.
Features - The Mountain Hardwear Trango 2 comes with 2 doors, so if all your gear is at one end, you’re right to get out another. Unfortunately, there’s only a single vent at the top of the main tent body, which may cause condensation in certain areas. The tent comes with three large pockets on each side along with four on the ceiling, so you have plenty of room to store your smaller belongings. The ceiling has lots of loops to create a clothesline, too.
Size/Weight - It’s also easy to set up and pack down, simply inserting all the poles and then attaching them to the body of the tent. The tent is just heavy, though; at over 9lbs, it’s not a light backpacking tent, but it’s durable.
Versatility - What makes the Mountain Hardwear Trango 2 so great is that it’s durable in so many different regions. It’s a 4-season tent that can withstand extreme conditions in storms, snow and winds due to its strong design. It’s even easy to pitch in high winds! Just keep in mind that it’s bulkier and heavier than most other backpacking tents. It’s also a great 4WD tent!
Overall - The Mountain Hardwear Trango 2 is made for those who love their expedition camping and know they’ll be surrounded by rough conditions.
