Our Analysis & Ratings
This 4-season tent with 2.7 square meters of interior space fits two campers in a comfortable liveable room. Its versatility means it’s a great option for summertime camping, mountaineering or trekking (although being a 4-season, it could get a bit warm during a heat wave). The lightweight fabric and double wall design do a good job of handling condensation, so you’ll get a comfortable night’s sleep.
Comfort - Comfort here means it feels way bigger than its actual size. The neatly rectangular internal space means nobody’s squashed at one end.
Construction - The MSR Access 2 uses durable Easton Syclone carbon poles that perform fairly well to withstand strong winds. As for weatherproofing, this packs a fly with silicone coating and the floor of the tent with a water-repellent (DWR) coating to prevent water from seeping through.
Features - The double-walled design works well for cold weather and condensation. As always, we like a double-vestibule design, and this tent features vestibules that easily store your pack and dirty hiking shoes. There are also a decent amount of internal pockets so everything stays organised.
Size/ Weight - For the high price of this tent, we’d love to have seen a slightly smaller and lighter result, but given that it’s a double-wall, 4-season tent, that may be wishful thinking on our part. It should be noted that the packed size and weight are comparable to the MSR Hubba Hubba NX, so they are doing well to meet the same specs in a 4-season tent.
Versatility - While it is recommended more for cold weather, adjustable double zippers that open up the top of the fly and internal tent to allow more airflow mean it is definitely usable in a US summer unless we get to 40 degrees again.
Overall - A really versatile option for a four-season tent.
