Our Analysis & Ratings
The Heimplanet Backdoor Classic is an innovative tent that’s quite high quality, too. It’s perfect for families or groups up to four people, although it’s quite expensive and small for a family tent. It’s a great option for families who camp often and who do more rugged exploration trips.
Comfort - Unless you’re a child, you will be bending down when moving about the tent, but the wide entrance makes it feel quite spacious. When all the vents are closed, condensation can develop underneath the outlet layer, but it doesn’t penetrate through the inside when it drips onto the roof of the inner tent.
Construction - Heimplanet Backdoor Classic is made with nylon, dacron and polyester materials and it has two entrances for comfortable entry. If you want a cool-looking tent, this is the one to buy.
Features - As an inflatable, pole-less tent, it uses inflatable support pillars that still give it support but without the hassle. It all inflates with just one valve. We found the first setup to be quite labor-intensive — borderline frustrating — as you have to connect the airframe, inner tent and outer tent up for the first time. We did this at home before we went out for our testing, so when we actually got to the campsite, the setup was extremely easy, because you can then leave everything connected and just inflate and deflate. There are multiple storage pockets to store belongings, as well as one in the ceiling. The pump, though, is sold separately, which is disappointing considering the high price.
Size/Weight - At 13.5lbs, it’s one of the lighter tents on our list, but this is also because it’s one of the smallest. The inner tent is just 62sqft, so it’s primarily for sleeping. It’s the only tent that made our best family tent reviews that we would consider hiking with, although we haven’t tested this. Also note, though that because the airframe tubes are fabric-covered, they can take a while to dry before packing away if there’s been rain or condensation.
Versatility - It’s listed as a 4-season tent, so it works well for winter camping, especially since its inner tent has two layout options, which means it’s viable in summer as well (eg. not too warm). It can also withstand wind speeds of up to 110kmph.
Overall - If you need the lowest weight possible in a family tent, this is the way to go.
