Our Analysis & Ratings

If you’re after durability and sturdiness, the ALPS Mountaineering King Kong should be one you consider. It combines comfort, simplicity, storage, size and durability, which is everything you need in a long-lasting camping chair.

Comfort - There’s plenty of seatroom with this chair; some might even think too much! It supports up to 800lb, which is the highest on this list and one of the highest we’ve seen. The seat and backrest are padded for comfort, and the adjustable armrests are also large enough to rest your entire arm on, allowing for relaxing lounging. While the backrest is firm, the seat dips quite a bit, which might not suit everyone but lends for moving around to get comfortable. Being so big, some smaller individuals may find themselves sinking into the chair.

Construction - The King Kong is made from powder-coated steel bars and 600D polyester, and it has wide feet, meaning the chair won’t sink too deep in soft ground. A downside to the padded material? It tends to hold water, so it’s not a chair to leave out in the weather. The cup holders are made of mesh.

Features - There’s plenty of storage with this chair, with two cup holders, two large side storage compartments and a mesh area behind the head.

Size/Weight - Due to how much seat space you get, the trade-off is a large and heavy chair, which doesn’t lend well to easy transport and lightness. It’s 13lb, which is a lot, although not the heaviest we’ve reviewed. It does come with a durable carry bag with two adjustable, backpack straps, so it’s quite easy to carry around, though.

Versatility - Being simple to use, the King Kong is a fantastic all-around camping chair, although, with its size, it’s not the best for trips where you want to trek light. It’s also not the most breathable, so might not be great for sweltering days.

Overall - For a camping chair you’re going to use often, the ALPS Mountaineering King Kong is worth the investment.
