Our Analysis & Ratings

We’re seriously impressed with this kayak. If you're like us and you love the idea of a hard-shell kayak's performance but need something you can actually fit in your car, the Sea Eagle RazorLite 393rl might just be your answer. It’s shockingly fast and tracks like a dream. Now, it’s not without its quirks, we still can't fold it up as neatly as it arrived, but for getting out on the water quickly and without a roof rack, it’s a great kayak.

Performance - Oh man, this thing can move! The first time you take it out, you’ll be stunned that you’re paddling an inflatable. That drop-stitch floor pumped to 10 PSI is rock solid. Pop the skeg on and it goes perfectly straight; you can really dig in with your paddle strokes without wasting energy correcting your course. It glides so well and feels so efficient. We’ve taken it out on lakes and slow-moving rivers, and it just eats up the distance. It’s definitely built for speed, which is why it feels a bit more ‘active’ to sit in than a wider, slower recreational kayak. While it doesn't turn on a dime, its tracking is exceptional for covering distance.

Construction - You can tell right away that Sea Eagle didn't cut corners here. The drop-stitch fabric is resilient and creates remarkably sturdy walls, forming a hull that feels solid and reliable. We’ve had our share of accidental bumps against hidden logs and rocky shores, and it’s taken them all in stride without a scratch. Knowing it has three separate air chambers is a huge relief for safety, too, keeping it buoyant even if one is compromised. The rigid plastic bow and stern look cool and really help it cut through the water cleanly. Everything from the valves to the D-rings feels robust and well-made. The high-back seat, too, is well-made and adjustable, though it can sometimes slide on the smooth floor. It’s a quality piece of gear.

Setup/Pack Down - Setting up the Sea Eagle 393rl Razorlite is really quick and simple. Inflating the three chambers with the included hand pump becomes a fast 5 to 10-minute job once you get the hang of it. It is a bit of a workout to get it to its full 10 PSI, but we found the electric pump to be a convenient luxury rather than a necessity. Packing it back up, though, is a bit of a headache. For the life of us, we can’t get it to fold back up as small and neat as it was when it showed up at our door. The material and the placement of features like stickers and the skeg box create hard creases that prevent a tidy roll, often resulting in a bulky package that struggles to fit back into the provided bag. This is quite a big frustration in an otherwise seamless experience.

Portability - The ability to stow a full-sized touring kayak in the boot of a small car or an RV storage compartment is its biggest draw. The included backpack is robust and, when successfully packed, holds everything: the kayak, pump, paddle and seat. At 35 pounds, it's manageable for most adults to carry short distances, though it does require a bit of a grunt. The new centre handle is a fantastic addition, making it much easier to manoeuvre the kayak solo when inflated. For anyone lacking roof racks or secure storage for a hard-shell kayak, the portability of this Sea Eagle kayak is a massive benefit.

Comfort - Comfort is a mixed bag that depends heavily on what you're comparing it to. The sea is actually really good for an inflatable, being adjustable and offering great support, especially with its high back. The thing is, you sit more on the kayak than in it, and the seat, while good, isn't as plush or supportive as a dedicated hard-shell stadium seat. The adjustable footpegs are a must-have; they make a world of difference for your paddling power and leg comfort. A quick tip: wear a life jacket that doesn’t have a big, bulky back, or it’ll push you forward and mess with the seat’s comfort.

Overall - So, would we recommend it? Absolutely, but to the right person. If you’re a beginner who just wants to putter around close to shore, this might be more boat than you need, but if you have some experience, want to cover some serious distance and need a kayak you can take anywhere, the Sea Eagle 393rl Razorlite is an incredible piece of kit. It’s fast, fun and built well. Just be ready for a slight battle when it’s time to go home. For us, the trade-off for unparalleled portability and killer performance is totally worth it. We absolutely love it. Read our other review to see the differences between the Sea Eagle FastTrack vs Razorlite.
