Our Analysis & Ratings

The Elkton Outdoors Steelhead 150 positions itself as a premium, angler-specific inflatable tandem kayak built for serious fishing. It’s designed to bridge the gap between portability and the robust features a fisherman demands, like stand-up casting stability and ample gear mounting options. It definitely feels far more like a dedicated fishing craft than a general-purpose inflatable, however, this specialised performance comes at a higher price and with a few accessory compromises that buyers should be aware of.

Performance - The rigid drop-stitch floor creates a rock-solid platform that inspires enough confidence for stand-up casting, a rare feat for an inflatable. It tracks surprisingly well for a wide, stable craft, thanks to its long waterline and two removable skegs, making it efficient to paddle on flatwater lakes and slow-moving rivers. It handles boat wake and mild chop with composure and the self-bailing drainage ports effectively manage any splashed water. Just note that its wide, 3'3" beam means it's not a fast kayak; it's designed for methodical fishing, not covering long distances quickly. The included paddles feel a bit short for the kayak's width, which can lead to your knuckles rubbing against the high side tubes during strokes.

Construction - The hull is made from 1000-denier reinforced layered PVC, which feels incredibly tough and abrasion-resistant against rocks and debris. Plastic nose cones on the bow and stern add much-needed protection when beaching. The core of its stability is the rigid drop-stitch floor, which is also removable for easier cleaning and drying. The Halkey Roberts locking valves are high-quality and secure, though there's a slight learning curve to using them correctly to prevent air escape when disconnecting the pump. Multiple hard mounting points are integrated directly into the hull for Scotty-style accessories, a major advantage over aftermarket glue-on solutions. We did notice some issues with minor water seepage from the drain plugs, though.

Setup/Pack Down - Setup is straightforward but requires some effort. The included dual-action hand pump is effective and has a helpful pressure gauge, allowing you to inflate the main chambers and the high-pressure drop-stitch floor to their correct PSI. The entire process takes about 10–15 minutes. You might want to look at getting a cheap electric pump for the bulk of the inflation to save time and energy, finishing with the hand pump for the final high pressure. Packing down is simple and the provided backpack is a standout feature, being generously sized with comfortable straps, and can comfortably fit the kayak, seats, pump and paddles without a frustrating struggle, a significant advantage over many competitors.

Portability - Weighing 44lbs, the Steelhead 150 is on the heavier end for an inflatable kayak, a direct result of its heavy-duty materials. This makes carrying it any significant distance in its backpack a two-person job or a strenuous effort for one. Its portability strength lies in storage and transport; it deflates into a manageable package that fits in a car trunk, SUV, or even a travel trailer, completely eliminating the need for roof racks. For anglers who need to drive to their launch spot and only carry the inflated kayak a short distance, it’s perfectly portable.

Comfort - The two adjustable, padded high-back EVA seats are supportive and a significant upgrade from the basic seats found on many inflatables. They provide good lumbar support for long days waiting for a bite. The cockpit is spacious, offering plenty of legroom for taller paddlers, and the adjustable footrests allow for a customized seating position. The open deck design provides ample space for gear, a cooler, or a dog. The only comfort note is that the high side walls, which contribute to its stability and dryness, can sometimes interfere with paddling strokes if the paddler’s technique isn't adapted.

Overall - The Elkton Outdoors Steelhead 150 is an impressive and highly capable inflatable fishing kayak that delivers on its core promises of stability, durability, and angler-friendly features. If you are a serious angler with limited storage space who values stand-up casting stability and built-in gear mounts above all else, the Steelhead 150 is one of the best investments you can make in the inflatable category.
