Our Analysis & Ratings

The Advanced Elements StraitEdge 2 Pro is a highly versatile inflatable kayak that confidently blurs the line between a recreational tandem and a serious crossover craft. Designed to handle everything from flatwater lakes to Class III whitewater, it positions itself as a true all-rounder for partners, families, or solo paddlers who want maximum flexibility. From our experience, it largely lives up to this ambitious promise, delivering exceptional stability and a feature set that prioritises fun and adventure over raw speed, all while packing down for easy storage.

Performance - The StraitEdge 2 Pro’s defining characteristic is its rock-solid stability. It feels incredibly secure, inspiring confidence in beginners and allowing for moving around, stretching out, or even napping without a second thought. This stability does come with a trade-off in speed; it’s not a fast kayak, especially when paddled solo, where its wide profile can catch the wind; however, with two paddlers in sync, it moves along respectably. The aluminium rib frame in the bow and stern, combined with the rigid drop-stitch floor, provides significantly better tracking than many other inflatables. While it won’t match the laser-like tracking of a long hardshell sea kayak, it holds a line well and feels predictable in various conditions, from ocean swells to moving river currents.

Construction - The main material is a heavy-duty PVC tarpaulin known for extreme puncture resistance, which inspires confidence around rocks and rough use. The core performance features are the integrated aluminium rib frames, which create a defined bow and stern shape for better water cutting, and the high-pressure drop-stitch floor that provides a truly rigid standing platform. The self-bailing ports are a brilliant feature, allowing you to open them in rough water or rain to automatically drain the cockpit, or close them in calm, cold conditions to stay dry. The included accessories, like the high-back seats with inflatable lumbar support, are good for day trips, though some serious adventurers might eventually look for aftermarket upgrades for longer trips.

Setup/Pack Down - Setup is straightforward and relatively quick. The process involves inflating the main chambers and the high-pressure drop-stitch floor, which is easily achieved with a standard double-action hand pump (included) or a faster electric pump. Inserting the aluminium frames is simple and doesn’t complicate the process. Packing down is logical, too, though the kayak’s robust materials result in a bundle that is compact but has some weight and bulk to it (18.6kg). It fits well into the provided duffel bag, but it’s not as effortlessly tiny or light as some single-person inflatables. The key is to make sure it’s dry before storing it away.

Portability - This is a kayak of practical portability. At 18.6kg, it’s light enough for two people to carry comfortably using its multiple handles, but it’s a bit much for a single person to carry any significant distance unaided. Its true strength is in storage and transport; it deflates to fit into the trunk of almost any car, completely eliminating the need for a roof rack or trailer. This makes it a great solution for those with limited storage space at home or who want to keep a capable tandem kayak ready for an adventure without da edicated vehicle setup.

Comfort - The cockpit is spacious, offering plenty of legroom for tall paddlers and the option to bring along a dog or gear. The seats are supportive with their high backs and adjustable inflatable lumbar support, making long paddles much more pleasant. The ability to reconfigure the seating into three positions (true tandem, solo centred, or solo offset) is a fantastic feature that greatly improves the kayak’s versatility. The only minor note is that the recommended 230cm paddle length is essential due to the wide beam, making sure you get a comfortable and efficient stroke without hitting the tubes.

Overall - The Advanced Elements StraitEdge 2 Pro is an impressively capable and versatile inflatable kayak that does well as a stable, confidence-inspiring platform for recreation, fishing and mild whitewater. Its genius lies in its adaptability, as it works genuinely well for two people and can be efficiently configured for a solo paddle.
