Our Analysis & Ratings
The Valandre Bloody Mary is a great, lightweight sleeping bag to keep you warm and comfortable in all seasons. While expensive, it does exactly as advertised: it keeps you warm, packs down small, is incredibly light and is versatile.
Comfort - The construction and down mean that you’re staying warm and toasty on below-freezing nights, with no cold spots in the bag. There are no issues with sweating or poor ventilation. It’s a bit tight fitting with its mummy shape, especially for larger individuals, so the larger one might be better to buy if that’s you. The shell dries quickly if condensation drips onto it and doesn’t seep through.
Construction - Made from 800 French fat grey goose down, it offers a nice warm fill material. The sleeping bag has a nylon shell and liner and behind the zipper, there’s a puffy draft tube to keep out the cold. It has a mummy-shaped design, which might not be for everyone — our tallest tester found it a little tight around his feet.
Features - This sleeping bag has two hood-adjustment toggles, which clip together for one-handed sizing. and it has an interchangeable draft collar for added warmth. The full-length zipper is quite smooth and the zipper pulls have large enough webbing to grab onto with gloves. It just doesn’t have a protective flap over the zipper to keep water from entering, like other high-end bags do.
Size/Weight - At 2.6lbs, it’s light enough for you to carry around during the summer but also provides enough warmth for deep winter. It packs down to about 8x7in, but the only constraint is that the storage bag is quite small, so it can be hard to get it in.
Versatility - The Bloody Mary is incredibly versatile for all seasons due to the draft collar. You can go collarless on mild nights, add in the midweight collar for cooler nights or use the full wraparound version in extremely cold weather. It has a degree rating of 5oF.
Overall - The Valandre Bloody Mary sleeping bag is a great choice for trips in all seasons, though it comes at a higher price.
