Our Analysis & Ratings

The REI Co-Op Half Dome 2 is a well-built, spacious and user-friendly tent designed for backpackers who are looking for something durable and comfy, rather than lightweight. It’s very liveable for two campers, is made with good materials and has a straightforward setup, making it a great choice for beginners or those mixing car camping with short backpacking trips. It has its disadvantages, though, such as having a nearly 6-pound packed weight, making it less suitable for long-distance backpacking, where lighter alternatives may be preferable. So, while it performs well for comfort and weather protection, its bulk and heft hold it back from being a top-tier backpacking tent.

Comfort - The Half Dome 2 shines in liveability, offering a roomy 88x52-inch floor and a peak height of 43 inches, which is generous for a two-person tent. Two standard sleeping pads fit comfortably, though wider 25-inch pads may feel snug. The full-mesh upper section improves ventilation, while the solid lower walls help block drafts and blowing debris. The tent’s symmetrical design allows for flexible sleeping arrangements (head-to-head or head-to-foot) and the vertical side walls create a more open feel than tapered designs. While taller campers might occasionally brush the sloping end walls, the overall space is well-suited for relaxation.

Construction - Unlike many lightweight backpacking tents that use thin materials, this tent uses 75-denier polyester for the floor and lower walls, along with a 40-denier nylon rainfly (which are both thicker than typical backpacking tents). The aluminum pole system is sturdy, though it lacks the premium DAC components found in higher-end models. The plastic hubs and buckles feel strong and the included footprint adds extra floor protection. This tent is built to last, making it a great option for frequent use on rocky or rough ground.

Features - The Half Dome 2 two large vestibules, which provide plenty of storage for gear, while four interior mesh pockets (two large and two small) keep all your essentials organized and within reach. A ceiling-mounted light diffuser pocket allows for ambient lighting when using a headlamp, adding convenience for nighttime use. Setup is straightforward thanks to color-coded poles and clips, along with REI’s HubCheck system, which helps confirm proper pole alignment. The rainfly also incorporates kickstand vents to improve airflow and reduce condensation, too. While the tent doesn’t have the premium extras of higher-end models, its practical design covers the essentials effectively, especially for the price.

Size/Weight - The biggest drawback of the Half Dome 2 is its weight and bulk. At 5lbs. 15.1oz. (including footprint), it’s significantly heavier than competitors like the Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 (3lbs.). The packed size (22x7.3in) is also large, making it a tight fit in smaller backpacks. While manageable for short trips or car camping, the weight makes it less appealing for thru-hiking or ultralight backpacking. If REI reintroduced a lighter SL version, this tent would be far more competitive.

Versatility - This tent is best suited for casual backpackers and those who aren’t too fussed over something lightweight. Its spacious interior and great build quality mean it works great for weekend trips, short backpacking treks, or even car camping when extra durability is appreciated. As mentioned, its weight and bulk limit its appeal for long-distance backpacking or ultralight adventures. While two campers can split the load, the overall heft makes it less ideal for solo hikers or those covering serious mileage, so if that’s you, you might want to choose a lighter alternative.

Overall - The REI Co-Op Half Dome 2 is a comfortable, durable and well-designed tent that does well in livability and ease of use. Its spacious interior, great build quality and thoughtful features make it a great choice for casual backpackers, couples, or car campers. It’s just its heavy weight and bulky packed size that limit its appeal for serious backpacking trips where lighter options exist. If REI releases a trimmed-down SL version, this tent could be a top contender. For now, it remains a strong option for those prioritizing comfort over weight savings.
