Our Analysis & Ratings

The REI Co-op Frostbreak 5 is not a backpacking tent; let’s get that out of the way. It’s bulky and a bit heavy for a sleeping bag, but it has its pluses. For car vamping in colder conditions, the shape of the REI Co-op Frostbreak 5 helps minimize cold spots while keeping you comfortable at night. We wouldn’t recommend using the bag all the way down to 5oF, though.

Comfort - Like many others on our list, the REI Co-op Frostbreak 5 is in a mummy shape, but it’s quite loose, giving you plenty of room to move. The material is also soft and comfortable on the inside. The insulation warmth the bag is advertised at, though, at 5oF, doesn’t seem to be the most accurate, as even in overnight summer conditions you can get quite cool. You will most likely need to layer up when sleeping.

Construction - Made from a recycled polyester shell that’s treated with a water-repellent finish. It has four inner layers of water-resistant synthetic full to help keep the cold out, when in damp conditions. The zipper is on the left, and the zipper itself can be a pain to zip up when inside as it can snag on the extra fabric.

Features - The REI Co-op Frostbreak 5 has a face muffler and draft tube to help keep the cold air out. there is also a small pocket on the outside of the bag. The drawstring on the carrying sack could be better quality.

Size/Weight - At 5lbs 1oz, the REI Co-op Frostbreak 5 is quite heavy. Keep in mind that it’s a winter sleeping bag, so it’s going to be heavier as it has more down to keep you warm.

Versatility - If you’re camping outdoors in cold conditions, the REI Co-op Frostbreak 5 is warm and comfortable. It’s not a backpacking sleeping bag due to its weight, and it also doesn’t compress well, so it's more of a car camping bag.

Overall - The REI Co-op Frostbreak 5 is a sleeping bag of good value for the casual winter adventurer.
