Our Analysis & Ratings

The Hilleberg Nammatj 2 is a versatile tent, good for bikepacking and extended campground trips, and can be used for hiking if you’re not too worried about the weight. It’s comfortable and durable with its tunnel design and strong silicon-coated nylon fabric, especially in winter and windy conditions. It’s one of our top choices for value, versatility, strength and durability.

Comfort - The tunnel-shaped design provides quite a spacious interior, offering comfort while in the rough conditions you’ll probably be in. The durability also gives you peace of mind that it will hold up in high winds or bad weather. There’s plenty of room for sleeping and storage, and, if needed, it can sleep two inside the tent and even another under the vestibule, if need be. The arch structure with perpendicular side walls means there’s plenty of headroom, and the internal space has a very roomy feel.

Construction - The Hilleberg Nammatj 2 fly is made from Kerlon and high-tenacity ripstop nylon, while the floor is 1-denier nylon. Setup begins from the outside as the inner tent suspends from the pole structure and outer tent, making it quite fast to set up while also making the inner tent drier. Once familiar, one person can pitch the tent in less than two minutes. The poles are incredibly durable and the aerodynamic design makes it stable in incredibly windy conditions; however, we’d recommend two people pitch the tent as the archway pole structures can be difficult to balance and peg out on your own.

Features - The Nammatj 2 has great volume, giving it more room for storing gear, cooking and comfort. Both ends of the tent have large, closable vents, allowing for fantastic airflow and ventilation. Sadly, it only has one pocket on each side wall, which is a slight compromise. Other than that, it has all the features you’d expect from a heavy-duty, 4-season tent.

Size/Weight - At 6lbs 10oz, the Hilleberg Nammatj 2’s tunnel design is a great blend of comfort, strength and reasonable weight, but we did mark it down because it’s the heaviest on our list and for us, too heavy for a pure hiking tent. For a double-wall winter tent, it’s reasonably lightweight, but you can reduce this if you’re hiking in favorable conditions by only using the outer tent for light travel or by swapping the stakes out for lighter ones.

Versatility - The Hilleberg Nammatj 2 is an all-seasons tent, with the only consideration being alpine climbing in the summer, as pitching locations can be limited as the tent would be more challenging to pitch in rocky terrain. Self-supporting or freestanding dome tents would be preferable in these terrains. If in snow, make sure you sweep away the snow that builds up around the doors that zip to the ground so it doesn’t get inside.

Overall - A great, versatile tent, whether you’re car camping, bikepacking, mountaineering or on a polar expedition, but a little heavy for backpacking in fine weather.
