Our Analysis & Ratings

The Advanced Elements StraitEdge Angler Pro is a highly specialized inflatable kayak designed from the ground up for serious anglers who lack the storage space for a traditional hardshell. It successfully bridges the gap between the portability of an inflatable and the performance features of a dedicated fishing platform. With its exceptional stability, extensive customisation options and thoughtful design, it makes a compelling case for itself; however, its considerable width and weight for an inflatable, along with some noted durability concerns, mean it won't be the perfect fit for every paddler.

Performance - On the water, the Angler Pro’s performance is defined by its incredible stability, which comes at the cost of some speed. The wide 38-inch beam and rigid drop-stitch floor create a platform so solid that standing up to cast or sight fish feels entirely natural and secure. This stability inspires confidence, especially when reeling in a larger catch. Tracking is good, helped significantly by the removable deep fin and the patented aluminium rib-frame technology in the bow and stern that helps the kayak cut through the water and resist wandering. While it won't win any races against a longer, narrower hardshell kayak, its pace is perfectly enough for the methodical nature of fishing. It handles calm lakes, slow rivers and even mild ocean conditions with ease.

Construction - The construction is where the Angler Pro aims to justify its ‘Pro’ name, using a multi-layer approach for maximum durability. The main side tubes feature a separate inner bladder protected by a tough, triple-layer PVC Tarpaulin outer cover, creating four layers of protection against punctures. Common abrasion points are further reinforced with additional grey pads. The drop-stitch floor is exceptionally strong, inflated to a high PSI to create a solid standing platform and covered with a 0.1in neoprene pad for comfort and extra protection. Long term, we have noted potential for seam leaks on the side tubes, which, while covered under warranty, raises a question about long-term durability. An excellent safety feature is the inclusion of over-inflation valves that automatically equalise pressure on hot, sunny days, preventing damage from expanding air.

Setup/Pack Down - Setup is a straightforward process that we think will take most people around 10 minutes. The procedure involves unfolding the kayak, inserting the removable accessory rails (if desired) and inflating the five separate air chambers in sequence: the two main side tubes first, then the high-pressure drop-stitch floor, followed by the lower-pressure bow and stern bags. A double-action hand pump is included, but the need for two different valve types can complicate using a third-party electric pump without an adapter. Pack-down is even faster, as the kayak can be wiped dry and deflated without the lengthy drying time associated with hardshell kayaks. The provided backpack-style bag is generously sized, making stowing the kayak hassle-free.

Portability - This is the Angler Pro's greatest strength and a key reason for its existence. When deflated, it packs down into a manageable bag measuring 32x18x11in, allowing it to be stored in a closet, car trunk, or RV storage compartment. This removes the need for roof racks or a trailer. Its portability does, however, have a caveat: while the packed size is small, its 41lbs weight is on the heavier side for an inflatable kayak. The backpack straps help, but carrying it any significant distance solo can be a challenge. We’d describe its portability as fantastic for storage and vehicle transport, but merely adequate for carrying over long stretches.

Comfort - The high-backed AirFrame PRO seat is a game-changer. Its aluminium frame provides real lumbar support and the adjustable straps allow you to customise the recline angle and positioning. As it raises you off the floor, it alleviates pressure on the legs and hamstrings, making it comfortable for long hours on the water. There is also plenty of space for average to larger-sized paddlers, with plenty of legroom and a footrest provided by the inflated bow chamber. The deck also offers plenty of room for a cooler, tackle box and even a medium-sized dog, with numerous stainless steel D-rings and bungee lashings to secure all your gear.

Overall - Ultimately, for the angler with limited storage space who refuses to compromise on fishing-specific features and on-water stability, the Angler Pro is one of the most compelling options on the market.
